Neighborhood Association Updates

Traffic:  The S.C. Department of Transportation has approved the request to establish – on a temporary, trial basis—a no right turn onto Confederate Avenue from south-bound traffic on Bull Street. First, signs will be posted announcing this new regulation. Next, the no-right turn will be put into place and enforced by police. Bruce Cotner, head of the Traffic Committee, will then hold a meeting to assess – with your help – the impact on the neighborhood. Please direct your comments to Bruce or to Association President Ellen Cooper.

Fire Station: Our nomination of the Number 7 Fire Station on North Main to the National Register of Historic Places has been approved!  The Neighborhood Association will present the firefighters with a historic plaque when the station reopens for business later this Fall.

Water lines: The mysterious green, blue, orange and pink lines that have been showing up on streets and sidewalks are markings completed by the Engineering Department of the City of Columbia. The City plans to install a new, 8-inch water line from Elmwood Avenue north to the Red Cross. It is not known when work will begin.

Fountain: Thanks to Association Vice-President Paul  Bouknight, the fountain at the corner of Franklin and Marion is once again flowing. Enjoy!

Cottontown Website:  Ron Hildreth is busy preparing our Neighborhood Association website and would like to include old photos of people and places in Cottontown.  If you have some to share, please write Ron at ron@hildrethus.com.

Click in the first paragraph mark on the page. On the Insert menu, click Text Box and drag on the page where you want the first column. Click your right mouse button and then click Create Text Box Link. The pointer becomes a pitcher. Click the text box on the left side of the second page to create a link. Create links for all text boxes within the same article on the left side of the document. Repeat the process for every text box in the right chain or article.

Pressing Enter twice at the top of each page will create an extra empty paragraph. This blank paragraph is useful if you want to insert text or graphics outside of the text boxes. You can delete the extra blank paragraph if you don't need it.

Operation Paintbrush

City Program Provides Free Paint

Does your house need to be painted on the outside? Are you short on money to buy the paint?  The City of Columbia offers free paint to qualified homeowners.  Grants are awarded according to need: For example, a family of three may not have an annual income higher than $46,500.  Also, the homeowners must be able to complete all preparatory work, such as replacing any rotten wood, washing and scraping the surfaces, etc.

For more information and to get an application form, call Ms. Princa (pronounce the “c” like an “s”) Wright in the office of Community Development at 545-3378.

In addition to the free paint, many loans for home-owners are available from the City. Ms. Wright can provide you with more information and direct you to the loan officers with the City.

Library Books for the Homebound

The Richland County Public Library's Homebound Service regularly delivers books to patrons 60 or older who can no longer go to the library.  One full-time staff person and several volunteers visit these patrons each month. For more information on the program, call 929-3416. Or, visit RCPL online at www.richland.lib.sc.us

Historic Window Glass

Do you have cracked glass in any of the windows of your historic Cottontown home? If so, you may want to replace it with a special kind that imitates the lovely, original glass, with its slightly wavy textures and occasional tiny bubble. Such glass is available just down the street from our neighborhood, at Classical Glass, 3031 N. Main (before the train trestle, on the left). Stop by or call 929-0707 for more info.
