Your Old House: Windows
You
may sometimes curse them because they stick (or are painted shut!), but
the windows in our historic Cottontown homes are actually antiques to
preserve and treasure.
Take a
good look at the windows in your home. You are probably seeing a
double-hung window, with an upper and lower sash. The upper sash is
probably divided into small sections of glass, called lights. The
patterns of lights vary throughout the neighborhood, and provide lovely
style to our homes. Take a close look at the glass itself; it was
finely hand -crafted, so you will see slight wavy lines or bubbles, that
provide a unique view to the world. Each window is a bit different, a
jewel from the past that no modern window can rival.
Remember, unlike many modern windows, these windows were built to last.
Worn parts (such as sash cords) or broken glass can be replaced. Adding
new glazing putty to reseal the windows is a fairly simple task for most
homeowners. Take care of your windows and you will never need to replace
them. |
